Enjoying the Journey…..

Hope everyone is having a fantastic week. Take a seat, relax and enjoy the second installment of “Enjoying the Journey”….enjoy…..

The ancient Indian teachings of Ayurveda emphasize the importance of maintaining balance in one’s life and within oneself – balance among mind, body and spirit, balance in our relationships with others and balance in how we, literally and figuratively, ingest and digest the world around us.

I find myself gravitating to the same short sighted lifestyle habits as many I observe around the world. We know the basic truths about how to take care of ourselves and yet we reach for those things that give us comfort and safety because they are familiar and not necessary because they are healthy.
I grew up in a home that adhered to the basic western diet. Food was primarily brown and white (meat and potatoes) and predominantly sweet, sour and salty in taste. Green colored items on our plate were rare and viewed as undesirable (except artichokes and those we fought over.)

Through Ayurveda, I learned that my meals are more emotionally and physically satisfying if they contain the seven colors of the rainbow and the six flavors of sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. When I create meals that contain these elements, the food portions that signals my brain that I am full, are smaller. Why – Because nutritional value is higher in foods with a variety of colors and flavors. We eat higher qualities of food because the foods we eat are often empty of nutritional value.

Stay tuned……
